Darkness and poverty greet our Messiah.
Weakness and shame are His swaddling clothes.
Nursed by our bitterness, suffering, and sorrow,
Death is the pathway the infant knows.

Evil and anger now crown our Messiah.
Anguish and blood are His kingly clothes.
Drinking the cup of our deep separation,
Dark is the pathway His mercy chose.

Precious and tender His kiss of forgiveness!
Love everlasting embraces earth!
